Breaking down barriers to Wellcome funding for Early Career & Mid-Career Researchers

Wellcome Trust will be visiting the University of Bristol on Friday 12th July 2-4PM to give an open presentation on the Early Career Award and Career Development Award funding schemes and take part in a panel discussion. This event provides an opportunity for Early Career Researchers from all disciplines in Bristol to network with research managers from Wellcome, current Wellcome award holders, and academic staff at Bristol who have experience of reviewing and serving on Wellcome funding advisory committees.   Register here.

Enterprising Women 4.0 launch

Bristol Innovations’ SETsquared has opened applications for Enterprising Women 4.0, its free business support programme for aspiring women founders, kindly funded by NatWest. Enterprising Women is open to early-stage women founders based in the UK who have a tech, tech-enabled or non-tech startup, business idea or side hustle. Over the course of 6-months, awardees will receive mentoring, coaching, workshops and online training, along with introductions to a network of advisers and investors.

REF- Research Excellence Framework Awareness: New workshop available

Have you ever wondered what the ‘REF’ is? How it works? What the process is all about? How does it impact the University, your School, your work?

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for evaluating research quality in universities, assessing output quality, economic and societal impact, and research culture and environment. This one-hour session provides an overview of the REF process, its assessment elements, and its impact on higher education. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. Enrol on Develop now!

Inclusive Research Toolkit & Opportunity to participate in train-the-trainer programme

The Inclusive Research Toolkit has been developed to support inclusive research practice. We are currently working on further reviewing and developing the content of the Toolkit, and on supporting its use and implementation through a train-the-trainer programme. We would like to invite you to complete this short form to share your thoughts on the toolkit, and to let us know if you are interested in taking part in a train-the-trainer workshop (in person). These half-day workshops will be held in May/June and numbers are limited. The workshops will be designed to support you with using the toolkit most effectively, and to support inclusive research practice across your Schools.

GW4 selected for Researcher SuperVision Project

The GW4 Alliance of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, and Exeter Universities is among nine Practitioner Partners selected to join the Next Generation Research SuperVision Project (RSVP), led by the University of York. This initiative aims to improve postgraduate research supervision nationwide. Leveraging their expertise in doctoral training, GW4 universities will collaborate with other partners to design and test professional development activities, including mentoring, to enhance supervisor capabilities and foster inclusivity in research culture. Wearable Tech for People with Dementia with Dr Zeke Steer: The Enterprise Sessions with Dr Shelby Temple

How do you make wearable technologies comfortable and unobtrusive for people who need them? Professor Michele Barbour talks to Dr Zeke Steer about how personal experiences with his great grandmother influenced the development of SmartSocks™, an innovative technology aimed at supporting individuals with dementia. If you ask ten people to give an opinion on what makes a good CV you will get as many different answers.  A CV is your document so it’s up to you to choose the appropriate style, tone and structure, using the guidance available to you. Vitae has created 18 fictional CVs based on real researchers from different disciplines and different styles.

They represent a variety of experience, disciplines and approaches to presentation. For each person an academic CV, a chronological CV and a skills-based CV is presented. The examples are not intended to be ‘perfect’ but to show how different people approach the challenge in different ways. You can access all 18 CVs here.

AMR (Anti-Microbial Resistance) Award

Following a successful AMR Networking event, DREI are excited to announce the launch of the Bristol Anti-Microbial Resistance Impact Award. This £5,000 award is available for pump-priming projects to help navigate the complexities of AMR-focused areas and support applications for future grants. The Deadline to apply is 3 July 2024.

Funding for Researchers of Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani Heritage

Accelerator Awards | Grant funding | Wellcome will be for up to £200,000 per researcher, for up to two years. Researchers at a UK higher education institution can apply at any stage of their career from postdoctorate onwards, up to but not including professorship. The awards cover any discipline, but the research area must align with our Discovery Research remit – encompassing research into life, health and well-being – or in the Climate and Health, Mental Health, or Infectious Disease research programmes. Deadline 18 June 2024.

The Festival of Enterprise 2024- Thursday 20th June, 09:00-16:00

This year’s Festival of Enterprise will highlight research and enterprise endeavors supported by University Enterprise Fellowships (UEFs) and Early Career Enterprise Fellowships (ECEFs). The event includes presentations from the 23/24 Cohort of UEFs and PechaKucha-style presentations by ECEFs. Expert judges will assess project outcomes and impacts, with prizes awarded for the best presentation and audience choice for the most engaging presentation. RSVP via Develop

GW4 Early Career Researcher Training Opportunities 

The University of Exeter is offering free workshops for GW4 researchers, including ECRs and PGRs:

Reducing waste in UK food production with Dr. Lucy McCarthy

The UK food system is in crisis. Farmers are going out of business, 2 million tonnes of food never gets past the farm gate, meanwhile, 4.7 million families in the UK live in food poverty. The Circular Agriculture Hub was co-founded by Lucy McCarthy to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers, ensuring that surplus produce is able to reach potential users. Watch this video to learn how Lucy was able to achieve far-reaching societal impact through her time on the ARC Accelerate program to work towards setting up a self-sustaining social enterprise.

Networking and Research Profile Building

You are invited to express your interest to attend Networking and Research Profile Building – a practical 3-day course for Postdocs and Fellows. This workshop will cover a range of skills that will help you raise your profile, and build the networks that can help you succeed, whether your career aims are in academia or beyond it.

It is collaboratively delivered across the over 10 UK Higher Education Institutions and you will get the opportunity to network, online, with researchers based at these institutions.

The Inclusive Research Toolkit has been developed to support inclusive research practice. We would like to invite you to complete this short form to share your thoughts on the toolkit, and to let us know if you are interested in taking part in a train-the-trainer workshop (in person). These half-day workshops will be held in May/June and numbers are limited. The workshops will be designed to support you with using the toolkit most effectively, and to support inclusive research practice across your Schools.

Bristol clear are piloting an in-person, cohort-based programme to support career development – the Taking Charge of your Career Programme and we are delighted to invite you to express your interest!

Over the course of 3 separate in-person development days, you will gain clarity on what you want, what you have to offer, and how best to communicate your skills and experience to job opportunities. These sessions are ideal for anyone who has some idea of what they want to do next, or no idea at all!

To be eligible to take part, you need to be able to attend ALL 3 in-person dates (10th June, 1st July, 15th July, 9:30-16:30, Senate House).

The Enterprise Roadshow is delighted to welcome Syngenta to the University of Bristol who will present their new Open Innovation programme “Shoots by Syngenta”.

Syngenta is looking to engage academics working in diverse fields including, but not limited to, chemistry, bio materials, plant science, protein biology and microbiology with the Syngenta team to help tackle agricultures most complex challenges. The Elizabeth Blackwell Institute is hosting AI workshops in health research, offering insights into various applications of AI across disciplines. These sessions aim to foster collaborations and enhance capacity for major grant applications. Register for the following workshops:

Career Development Residential Retreat

This retreat offers Research Associates and Senior Research Associates without an established position at the University of Bristol a chance to focus on career development and connect with peers. Through two days of workshops, participants will clarify their goals, gain confidence, and identify actions to advance their careers. Priority will be given to those facing barriers, including those impacted by Covid-19, and applicants from Black heritage backgrounds. Interested individuals should email Claire Wrixon (Claire.wrixon@bristol.ac.uk) with a 1-page expression of interest. Expenses, including travel and childcare up to £150, can be claimed via the school budget, see the expense policy. Limited spaces available; allocation will be via lottery if oversubscribed.

Focus on

 Understanding Precarity- Invitations for Expressions of Interest

There is growing concern – among the postdoctoral research community and beyond – regarding what is typically described as precarity. However, genuine solutions remain elusive. Here, we will discuss the issues Pathway 2 staff are facing, and share the relevant conversations happening at University level, with funders and in the wider sector. This will include outlining some of the challenges and constraints that exist, and giving participants the opportunity to work in small groups to propose solutions. Ultimately, solutions will only be identified through good faith dialogue and constructive challenge, involving all stakeholders. Our hope is that this session can be a first step towards this.

Our Voices Matter – Staff Experience Survey 2024 – your opportunity to make your voice heard

As you may have seen, the all staff survey is live and open until 20th March. It covers various aspects such as job satisfaction, personal development, and workplace relationships. As Pathway 2 staff, your input is crucial in driving meaningful improvements for yourself and for your colleagues.

You have the option to complete the survey online or in person at drop-in events organised by the Staff Engagement team (tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided):

BBSRC ICURe Engage – April 2024- (Wales and Southwest of England focused)

Applications for a new opportunity for bioscience research students/post-docs/research staff across the South West and Wales are now open with the call closing on the 12 April 2024.

This 4-week, part-time program aims to introduce participants to commercialization tools and entrepreneurship opportunities in bioscience research, prioritizing applicants from Wales and the South West of England. Inclusive Research Toolkit & Opportunity to participate in train-the-trainer programme

The Inclusive Research Toolkit has been developed to support inclusive research practice. We are currently working on further reviewing and developing the content of the Toolkit, and on supporting its use and implementation through a train-the-trainer programme. We would like to invite you to complete this short form to share your thoughts on the toolkit, and to let us know if you are interested in taking part in a train-the-trainer workshop (in person). These half-day workshops will be held in May/June and numbers are limited. The workshops will be designed to support you with using the toolkit most effectively, and to support inclusive research practice across your Schools.

From Cuttlefish to Clinic: The Enterprise Sessions with Dr Shelby Temple

How do you transition from academia to entrepreneurship? In the latest episode of the Enterprise Sessions, Professor Michele Barbour talks to Dr Shelby Temple about founding his company Azul Optics, a medical device company focused on using innovative screening technologies to improve eye health. Opportunity to transition discoveries beyond the lab

The Division of Research, Enterprise and Innovation and Spin Up Science are offering an ImpactLab for ECRs and PhD candidates. ImpactLab will equip you with holistic skills essential for innovation, leadership, and career success. 

Spin Up Science offers a 1-day training for ECRs and PhD students in life sciences, focusing on developing groundbreaking technology, transitioning discoveries beyond the lab, and mobilizing innovation resources. Hear from local bioscientists about transforming breakthroughs into impactful technologies. Attendance unlocks access to the Bioscientist MBA, a program for validating technology and meeting senior leaders, business owners, and investors.

Career Development Residential Retreat

This retreat offers Research Associates and Senior Research Associates without an established position at the University of Bristol a chance to focus on career development and connect with peers. Through two days of workshops, participants will clarify their goals, gain confidence, and identify actions to advance their careers. Priority will be given to those facing barriers, including those impacted by Covid-19, and applicants from Black heritage backgrounds. Interested individuals should email Claire Wrixon (Claire.wrixon@bristol.ac.uk) with a 1-page expression of interest. Expenses, including travel and childcare up to £150, can be claimed via the school budget, see the expense policy. Limited spaces available; allocation will be via lottery if oversubscribed.

UKRN Open Research Train- the- Trainer Opportunity

Interested in Open Research?

Join the free train-the-trainer courses offered by the University of Bristol in partnership with the UK Reproducibility Network, who are recruiting future trainers to lead sessions on pre-registration of studies, open data, preprints, and more. No expertise required—just a passion for learning!

What’s in it for you? Enhance your teaching skills, boost your CV, and receive UKRN accreditation upon completion. Plus, contribute to the development of your colleagues and gain recognition for your professional development. How does it work? Attend a train-the-trainer workshop, deliver at least one training session, and provide supplementary materials. You’ll receive continuous support from the Research Culture team and join a community of Open Research Trainers.

The Broadening Horizons mentoring programme – EOI deadline extended to 1st February 2024!

Aiming to support early career researchers with their professional development and raise awareness of the skills and mindset needed to translate discoveries into practical application for societal benefit. It does this by connecting mentees with mentors from industry, policy and the third sector. The programme is free and runs from February to September 2024, and gives mentees exposure to opportunities in translating research and provides tools, knowledge and guidance.

Community Fellowship Opportunity – From the Personal to the Planetary: Interaction, Activism and Futures

The Brigstow Institute and Cabot Institute for the Environment are collaborating on an initiative called From the Personal to the Planetary: Interaction, Activism and Futures. The initiative seeks to activate a broad range of people and stakeholders in considering climate change and responding to the climate emergency.

  • Deadline: 10:00am, 19th February 2024
  • Funding available: £5,000 per fellowship (VAT inclusive)
  •  Number of fellowships available: a total of eight P2P Community Fellowships positions (four academic fellowships drawn from the University of Bristol only, four fellowships for those beyond the university)
  • Timescale of fellowships: fellowships begin June 2024 for 10 months with some flexibility.

Invitation to attend Arts, Law and Social Sciences health & social care research networking event on Tuesday 27 February 2024

You are invited to an interdisciplinary networking event hosted by the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute. This will be an opportunity for health and wellbeing researchers across the university who adopt social sciences, arts and humanities research methods to get together, learn about current research at Bristol in this space, find out what expertise is available and make new connections.

The networking event will be held in-person over lunch on Tuesday 27 February 2024, 12:00 – 14:00, in the Arts Complex, Humanities Cinema Room G.H01, 7 Woodland Road. Light lunch will be provided in the Research Space on the first floor above G.H01 and participation is free. Library Services are excited to announce that we have a new Scholarly Works Policy. This is an important step to ensuring free and open access to all of our research outputs, and to enabling authors to retain the rights for their work, without unnecessary admin. The Inclusive Research Toolkit

It can be difficult to know where to begin with inclusive research. You know you want to do something… but what?

The Inclusive Research Toolkit provides a framework to start thinking about equity and inclusivity in your own research, with lots of resources, case studies and activities along the way.

How it works: The toolkit is organized into sections according to the stages of the research process. These sections each contain several key topics about different inclusive research practices. The toolkit is set up as a self-guided learning resource on Develop, and is supported through an interactive pdf workbook (which you can download and print).

Training from other providers: Research Culture Uncovered Series

In this episode of the Research Culture Uncovered Series- The Bee’s Knees: Uncovering the Secrets of Research Culture in the Hive Ged Hall talks to Dr Vicki Jenneson and Dr Fran Pontin.

The main points from the discussion include:

  • The significance of collaborative work across professional and academic teams and the advantages of building networks in conducting impactful research, as noted by Vicki.
  • The importance of communicating complex data science methods and results in a clear, convincing manner to non-data scientists. This is a skill that Vicki and Fran emphasize can make a significant difference in the impact of research.

But the most importantly take away is that early career researchers can and do contribute significantly to the generation of prize winning and important impact.
